This is a portrait of our son in a characteristic pose reading a book. I tried to capture the light streaming in through the dining room window onto him, the chair and the pamment floor. It’s more contre jour than fully lit. I am inspired by the Dutch seventeenth century painters such as Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch and Scandinavian nineteenth century painters such as Hammershoi.

There is a companion piece of our daughter, Girl At The Window, which is also in the gallery of my website. I also did a series of interiors which featured both of them but made the mistake of selling one once and learnt my lesson. The figures in all these paintings are turned away as Hammershoi and others did.
